L'Institut Jean Nicod a l'immense tristesse de faire part de la disparition de l'un de ses étudiants, Martin Fortier.

Les travaux de Martin Fortier sont exemplaires de l’esprit interdisciplinaire de l’EHESS, où il avait obtenu brillamment deux Masters, l’un en anthropologie, l’autre en philosophie contemporaine (en partenariat avec l’ENS). C’est également à l’EHESS, et plus précisément à l’Institut Jean-Nicod, qu’il travaillait à la rédaction finale de sa thèse de doctorat. Sous la direction de Jérôme Dokic, il y étudiait le rôle des processus culturels et neurobiologiques dans les expériences induites par des substances hallucinogènes, dans une perspective tenant à la fois de la philosophie théorique, des sciences cognitives et de l’anthropologie. Martin Fortier s’est illustré par plusieurs études empiriques et théoriques qui feront date, en lien avec le shamanisme amérindien, la pensée magique chez les enfants Shipibo en Amazonie, ou sur les expériences métacognitives engagées dans l’hallucination, comme les sentiments de réalité, d’irréalité et d’hyper-réalité. Parmi ses publications récentes figure l’ouvrage important qu’il a édité avec Joëlle Proust sur la diversité métacognitive (Metacognitive diversity: An interdisciplinary approach, Oxford University Press, 2017). Martin Fortier a co-fondé ALIUS, un groupe de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité de la conscience, qui a organisé ces dernières années plusieurs ateliers internationaux de haut niveau. Avant même d’avoir soutenu sa thèse, il avait obtenu une allocation post-doctorale en psychologie de la Fondation Fyssen pour poursuivre ses recherches à l’Université de Californie, dans le laboratoire d’Alison Gopnik. Il comptait y développer l’hypothèse selon laquelle des structures conceptuelles abstraites alternatives émergent dans différentes cultures, d’une manière qu’il se proposait d’expliquer dans le cadre d’une théorie bayésienne de l’apprentissage. La disparation précoce de Martin Fortier, que de nombreux collègues de l’École connaissaient bien et appréciaient tant, est tragique pour notre communauté. C’est aussi un jeune chercheur d’une curiosité insatiable, un passeur entre les disciplines et un esprit d’une inventivité rare qui s’en va brutalement.

Martin Fortier's work is exemplary of the interdisciplinary spirit of the EHESS, where he brilliantly obtained two Masters degrees, one in anthropology and the other in contemporary philosophy (in partnership with the ENS). It was also at EHESS, and more precisely at the Institut Jean-Nicod, that he worked on the final drafting of his doctoral thesis. Under the supervision of Jérôme Dokic, he studied the role of cultural and neurobiological processes in the experiences induced by hallucinogenic substances, from the perspective of theoretical philosophy, cognitive sciences and anthropology. Martin Fortier's work includes several period empirical and theoretical studies related to Amerindian shamanism, magical thinking in Shipibo children in the Amazon, and the metacognitive experiences engaged in hallucination, such as feelings of reality, unreality and hyperreality. Among his recent publications is the landmark book he co-edited with Joëlle Proust on metacognitive diversity (Metacognitive diversity: An interdisciplinary approach, Oxford University Press, 2017). Martin Fortier, co- founded ALIUS, an interdisciplinary research group on the diversity of consciousness, which has organized several high-level international workshops in recent years. Even before the end of his graduate studies, he obtained a post-doctoral fellowship in psychology from the Fyssen Foundation to pursue his research at the University of California, in Alison Gopnik's laboratory.

There he intended to assess the hypothesis that alternative abstract conceptual structures are emerging in different cultures in a way that he proposed to explain within the framework of a Bayesian theory of learning. The early demise of Martin Fortier, whom many colleagues at the School knew and loved so well, is a tragedy for our community. We mourn a young researcher with an insatiable curiosity, a builder of bridges between disciplines and a spirit of rare inventiveness.
